Miami football target Georgia OT Amarius Mims top available transfer

Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims who announced his decision to transfer on Sunday has been named the top player currently in the portal by 247 Sports. The Miami football program and Florida State are the projected leaders to receive a commitment from Mims. Mims is the 10th ranked transfer overall.

The Miami football program has added eight transfers during the 2022 offseason. Half of those transfers have been on the line of scrimmage. Mims would be the third OL Miami has added through the transfer portal. Former Oregon OL Logan Sagapolu and Jonathan Denis followed Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal to Miami.

Cristobal has quickly added depth to the Miami OL. In addition to Denis and Sagopolu, Miami signed three-star OL Anez Cooper and Matthew McCoy in the Class of 2023. The path for Mims receiving playing time at Georgia was as a guard. Part of the reason for Mims’ transfer appears to be his desire to place OT.

The departure by Mims was highlighted by 247 Sports. Mims was reportedly thinking about transferring from Georgia for months. As a true freshman in 2021, Mims played eight games with the Bulldogs. Mims was the eighth-ranked player, third-ranked OT and number one in Georgia in the 2021 recruiting cycle.

Other SEC schools like Florida and LSU have also been rumored to be interested in Mims. If Mims wants to transfer to another SEC program he would have to petition the conference to avoid sitting out in 2022. SEC players needed to enter the transfer portal by February 1 for immediate eligibility per conference rules.

Miami currently has the 23rd ranked 2022 transfer portal class. Adding Mims would potentially move up the rankings. Some of the transfers Miami currently has are excepted to make impacts this season. Mims would come in and be projected to challenge to be the starting Miami right tackle at the least.
