Miami Hurricanes quarterbacks were efficient but methodical during the spring game on Saturday. The Miami QBs completed 43 passes in 72 attempts for 382 yards. The 5.23 yards per attempt would have ranked 129th out of 130 teams during the 2021 season. That should improve during the regular season.

Miami finished 29th last season averaging 8.3 yards per attempt. Starting QB Tyler Van Dyke frequently pushed the ball downfield last season. Van Dyke averaged nine yards per pass attempt in 2021. That tied for 10th nationally. Under new offensive coordinator, Josh Gattis Miami will take what the defense gives them.

Van Dyke completed 20 passes in 32 attempts for 177 yards and one touchdown and according to David Wilson of the Miami Herald didn’t complete a pass in the air longer than 20 yards. Garcia was14-24 for 134 yards and did not complete a pass longer than 25 yards. The longest completion of the day was 26 yards.

Tight end Khalil Brantley had a 26-yard catch and run. Rising third-year sophomore Xavier Restrepo led Miami receivers with six receptions and 60 yards. Rising sophomore Jacolby George had four receptions for 22 yards and finished with the only TD reception on Saturday. Expect more balance from Miami offensively in 2022.

Thad Franklin led the Miami Hurricanes running backs with 15 carries for 54 yards and a TD. Walkon Devon Perry had seven carries for 39 yards. Mississippi transfer Henry Parrish had eight carries for 38 yards and two TDs plus three receptions for 32 yards. Miami was missing three RBs during the Spring Game.

Rising third-year sophomores Don Chaney Jr. and Jaylan Knighton were out this spring with injuries. Miami 2022 signee Tre’Vonte Citizen will arrive this summer. Miami will try to establish the run more under Gattis than they did the last two seasons. Michigan was 15th averaging 214.36 rushing yards per game in 2021.

The Wolverines finished 37th averaging 8.1 yards per pass attempt in 2021. Miami had 48 carries for 147 yards and three TDs on Saturday. That was still a disproportionate number of runs to passes in the Spring Game. Michigan averaged 41.1 rushing attempts in 2021 to 28.1 passes.

Next. Mario Cristobal wants more physical sustainability. dark

Michigan did not have the talent at QB that Miami has with Van Dyke. Miami was good in pass protection in 2021 but has to improve it’s run blocking for the 2022 season. Cristobal always preaches the importance of physicality. For Cristobal having a physical team is the mantra of the culture he wants in his program.
