The Miami football program could pursue Arizona State transfer linebacker Eric Gentry according to multiple sources. Gentry was an edge rusher and outside linebacker for Arizona State as a true freshman in 2021. Several media outlets named Gentry a true freshman All-American. Gentry signed with ASU out of Philadelphia.

At 6’6, 200 pounds, Gentry was extremely productive for the Sun Devils in 2021. Gentry had 45 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack and two pass breakups. Ten Power Five programs reached out to Gentry shortly after his entry into the transfer portal. USC is reportedly the frontrunner for Gentry with Miami second.

Gentry chose Arizona State over Virginia coming out of high school. Miami should be in a good position with a chance to offer an excellent opportunity to challenge to become a starter. The versatility Gentry has as an edge rusher or outside linebacker would help the Miami defense. Miami has not added a 2022 transfer LB.

The Miami football program is strongly pursuing UCLA transfer LB Caleb Johnson. Miami is the projected leader to sign Johnson. Miami has added nine transfers during the 2022 offseason. That includes West Virginia edge rusher Akheem Mesidor who committed to Miami on Wednesday. Pro Football Focus praised Gentry.

"“At 6-foot-6, 200-pounds, Gentry stood out on the field for his lanky frame and his disciplined play. The three-star true freshman had the lowest negatively graded play rate against the run among Pac-12 off-ball linebackers and allowed only 59 yards in coverage on 144 such snaps while breaking up two passes.”"

Including Mesidor, Miami has added one transfer cornerback, two offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, one running back and one wide receiver during the 2022 offseason. Gentry was a three-star signee with Arizona State who was the 776th ranked player, 44th edge rusher and 19th in Pennsylvania in the 2021 Class.

Miami is likely to remain active in the transfer portal with the May 1 deadline for players having immediate eligibility looming. Any players who transfer after May 1 have to petition the NCAA for 2022 eligibility. Gentry is ranked by 247 Sports as one of the top 20 transfers in the 2022 Class.
