Miami basketball adds top 15 transfer Norchad Omier
The Miami basketball program added top 15 transfer Norchad Omier from Arkansas State on Tuesday afternoon. Omier committing to Miami comes three days after the Hurricanes added Kansas State guard Nijel Pack on Saturday. CBS Sports ranks Pack as the second-ranked transfer nationally and Omier 14th.
Omier is a pure post player at 6’7, 232 pounds. Miami needed to add an experienced low post player with starter Sam Waardenburg and backup Rodney Miller finishing their eligibility. Omier averaged 17.9 points per game, 12.2 rebounds, shot 63.2 percent from the floor and 72.9 percent from the free-throw line in 2021-22.
Omier chose Miami over Florida State, Georgetown and Texas Tech. Miami has one of the best transfer classes in college basketball with Omier with Pack. The Miami basketball program moves up to the third best transfer class with Pack and Omier. Providence and Arkansas are ahead of Miami with five and four commits each.
Omier and Pack each have two years of eligibility remaining. That significantly makes up for the losses of 2021 signees Matthew Cross and Earl Timberlake following the 2021 season. Jim Larranaga has significantly improved the roster for next season. Miami should continue to contend for an ACC Championship.
In addition to the losses of Miller and Waardenburg, Miami also lost starting guards Kameron McGusty and Charlie Moore. The other Miami starting guard, Isaiah Wong entered his name into the NBA Draft with the possibility of returning next season. Miami signed the 20th-ranked recruiting class in 2022.
The Hurricanes greatly upgraded their size with Omier and four 2022 signees. All four of the 2022 Miami signees are at least 6’6. Miami signed 6’10 four-star center Favour Aire, 6’8 power forward A.J. Casey and wings, 6’7 Danilo Jovanovich and 6’6 Christian Watson. Miami should continue to build on its 2022 Elite Eight run.
Miami potentially has one scholarship remaining. That will depend on the decision that Wong makes. Wong has until June 1 to decide to remain in the 2022 NBA Draft or return for his fourth season. If Wong returns the scholarship will be his. Miami has a great foundation set for the 2022-23 season.
