Miami Hurricanes WRs Mike Harley and Charleston Rambo sign as UFAs
Miami Hurricanes wide receivers, Mike Harley and Charleston Rambo signed as undrafted free agents late on Saturday. Harley signed with the Cleveland Browns and Rambo, the Carolina Panthers. Rambo being undrafted was a surprise after he was projected as the 212th pick in the draft by The NFL Mock Draft Database.
Rambo set Miami single-season records with 79 receptions for 1,172 yards with seven touchdowns during the 2022 season. A 4.57 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine dropped Rambo out of the draft. Rambo had a breakout season with Miami after transferring from Oklahoma.
In his second season with the Sooners, Rambo had 43 receptions for 743 yards and five TDs. Those numbers dropped to 25, 312 and three in his third season in Norman. Rambo will have to prove he can play on special teams to make an NFL Roster. Rambo did not return kicks in his one season at Miami.
At Oklahoma Rambo had 13 kick returns for 326 yards and one punt for 11. Rambo also has five career tackles. Rambo is 6’1 and he told Susan Miller Degnan of the Miami Herald, 186 pounds. That is up from the 177 Rambo weighed in at the NFL Combine. The combination of his weight and 40 time caused Rambo’s fall in the draft.
Carolina did not select any WRs in the 2022 NFL Draft. D.J. Moore led Carolina with 93 receptions for 1,157 yards and four TDs in 2021. After Moore, the numbers fall drastically to Robbie Anderson. Carolina does not have great depth at WR. If Rambo has a good preseason he has a good chance to make the roster.
Harley set the career and single-game record for receptions during the 2021 season. With an extra season granted because of Covid Harley had 182 receptions for 2,158 yards and seven touchdowns during his Miami Hurricanes career. The experience Harley has as a kick returner should help him in the NFL.
Harley had 12 kickoff returns for 244 yards and three punt returns for 15 yards during his Miami career. In Cleveland, Harley will become teammates with former Miami tight-end David Njoku. Cleveland selected two WRs in the draft. David Bell from Purdue was chosen in the third round and Mike Woods from Oklahoma in the sixth.
Cleveland has far more talent at WR. The Browns traded for Amari Cooper from Dallas during the offseason. Bell, Cooper and Donovan Peoples-Jones are the projected starters in the three WR Cleveland offense. Cleveland has a deep and talented WR corps behind its starters. Harley has a challenge making the roster.
