ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. named Tyler Van Dyke as one of five or six quarterbacks who could be selected in the 2023 NFL Draft first round. Kenny Pickett of Pittsburgh who was the ACC Player of the Year in 2021 was the only QB selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Pickett stayed in Pittsburgh with the Steelers.

Tyler Van Dyke has been projected in the first round of multiple 2023 NFL Mock Drafts. Another season like he had in 2021 should propel Van Dyke to be recognized as one of the top QBs in college football in 2022. C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Bryce Young of Alabama are projected to be the first two QBs taken in 2023.

Will Levis of Kentucky, Anthony Richardson of Florida and Van Dyke are projected as the next tier of QBs in the 2023 NFL Draft. Kiper equates the 2023 NFL Draft to 2021 when the first three picks and five in the first round were QBs. Van Dyke could be the first Miami QB selected in the first round since Steve Walsh in 1989.

Brad Kaaya was the last Miami QB selected in the NFL Draft in 2016. The Detroit Lions selected Kaaya in the sixth round. Miami offensive tackle Zion Nelson is also projected to be a 2023 first-round draft pick by several media outlets. Playing under new offensive coordinator Josh Gattis provides Van Dyke with a new perspective.

Former Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee ran an uptempo spread offense that pushed the ball downfield. Gattis will expect Van Dyke to take what the defense is giving him. Miami will likely run a more traditional tempo with Gattis as the OC. Van Dyke can prove his ability to play in multiple offenses in 2022.

Van Dyke is part of a deep group of QBs in the ACC. Last season Van Dyke competed well against Pickett, North Carolina State QB Devin Leary and Brennan Armstrong of Virginia. Miami does not play NC State this season, but Van Dyke will have the chance to avenge the loss to Virginia in 2021.
