Miami baseball closer to ACC title despite FSU series loss

The Miami baseball team moved closer to the ACC Championship despite losing the series at Florida State this weekend. Miami won the series opener 8-2 on Saturday afternoon after the game on Friday night was canceled due to lightning. Florida State rallied for an 8-2 victory on Saturday night and a 6-4 win on Sunday.

After falling behind by one run in the first inning, the Miami baseball team scored five unanswered runs to take control of the game. Shortstop Dominic Pitelli was the hitting star with three hits in four at-bats and two runs scored. Carson Palmquist earned his eighth win of the season against three losses.

Palmquist threw six innings, allowed five hits, two unearned runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Gage Ziehl pitched the final three innings allowing two hits, with no runs and six strikeouts for his first save of the season. Three run frames in the second and seventh innings were the difference in game one on Saturday.

Poor defense cost the Miami baseball team in a 6-4 loss in the second game on Saturday. Miami committed six errors against Florida State resulting in all six Seminoles’ runs being unearned. Florida State led 5-0 after four innings and added their sixth run in the bottom of the fifth after Miami played three in the top of the inning.

Karson Ligon started game two allowing all six unearned runs on eight hits, two walks, one hit batter with two walks and six strikeouts. C.J. Kayfus and Maxwell Romero each had two hits for Miami in the loss on Saturday. Bryce Hubbart improved to 8-1 in 2022 with the win for Florida State.

The game on Sunday was competitive with multiple ties and lead changes before Florida State took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Florida State takes the series from Miami after winning all four games against the Hurricanes during the 2021 season.

Miami defeated Central Florida 16-10 in its sole midweek game on Wednesday. Kayfus, Romero and Dorian Gonzalez, Jr. each had three hits to lead Miami. Zach Levenson had five RBIs and Romero four in the Miami win over UCF. After allowing UCF three in the first inning Miami scored nine unanswered runs.

Miami added two runs in the third and four in the fifth for a 15 to six lead entering the fifth inning. The weekend series at Florida State was the last road trip of the season for Miami. Miami returns home on Tuesday to host Florida Gulf Coast in its final midweek game of 2022. Miami hosts Notre Dame next weekend.

The three-game series against the Fighting Irish will likely determine the regular-season ACC Champion. Miami can clinch the regular-season ACC Championship and number one seed in the tournament May 24 through 29 in Charlotte. The Hurricanes should be safe hosting an NCAA Baseball Tournament regional.
