There has been a lot of discussion about what the 2022 expectations should be for the Miami football program in their inaugural season with Mario Cristobal as head coach. The return of quarterback Tyler Van Dyke and the exceptional coaching staff hired by Cristobal have set expectations high for Miami in 2022.

Duke, Virginia and Virginia Tech also enter their first seasons under new head coaches in 2022. North Carolina and Pittsburgh will have new starting QBs for the 2022 season. Miami signed the 13th best freshman class and ninth-best transfer class for 2022. The upgrade for the roster should be prevalent on defense.

Seven of the 11 transfers Miami added for the 2022 season are on defense. Four transfers are projected to start for Miami on defense. The infusion of talent to the Miami roster and transition with the other ACC Coastal Divison teams will likely make Miami a co-favorite to win the Coastal Division with Pittsburgh.

The fortunes for the Miami football program in 2022 will likely depend on the improvement on defense. Chip Patterson of CBS Sports asked “What are the reasonable expectations for Mario Cristobal in Year 1″  as part of “100 Days Out: College football names, games, storylines as we count down to the 2022 season.”

"“13. What are reasonable expectations for Mario Cristobal in Year 1? Cristobal is so passionate about his alma mater and seems to have perspective on the year-over-year work required to restore Miami’s glory, but patience doesn’t come easy to college football fans. What’s worse (or better, depending on your perspective) is that even unbiased logic suggests Miami’s expectations for 2021 should include competing for an ACC title. The Hurricanes have the reigning ACC Offensive Freshman of the Year at quarterback with Tyler Van Dyke and an impressive coaching staff assembled by Cristobal. They are also staring down a division that just saw three schools change their coach and two others lose their quarterbacks to the NFL Draft. How Miami stacks up against Texas A&M will dictate the national conversation, but closer to home, it’s fair to think that anything short of playing in the ACC Championship Game is a disappointing season.”"

Miami opens the season against FCS Bethune-Cookman at Hard Rock Stadium and hosts Southern Mississippi in week two. The Hurricanes should be able to ease into the season before playing at Texas A&M in week three. A win over Texas A&M would significantly increase the expectations for Miami in 2022.

Oregon improved from 7-6 the year prior to Cristobal becoming the head coach to 9-4 in his first season. In four seasons, Oregon finished 35-13 under Cristobal. Miami has not had a similar four-year stretch in 20 years. National expectations for Miami will be high in 2022 with Cristobal as the head coach.
