Tyler Van Dyke was named the eighth-best quarterback prospect last week by 247 Sports. Van Dyke had a breakout season in 2021 becoming the Miami starting QB after D’Eriq King was lost for the season with a shoulder injury. The ACC named Van Dyke the 2021 Offensive Rookie of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

Tyler Van Dyke is the foundation Mario Cristobal will build the Miami football program around in his inaugural season this fall. Van Dyke has been routinely touted as a top-five 2022 Heisman Trophy candidate. Van Dyke improved throughout the 2022 season. Most mock drafts project Van Dyke in the first round.

At 6’4, 220 pounds with a big arm, Van Dyke has the ideal skills to play in the NFL. The projection as the eighth-best NFL prospect by 247 Sports is lower than most other 2023 NFL Mock Draft predictions. Another season like 2021 should place Van Dyke higher than eighth among 2023 NFL QB prospects.

After playing in the uptempo spread offense Rhett Lashlee ran with Miami the last two seasons, Van Dyke will play under offensive coordinator Josh Gattis in 2022. Gattis won the 2021 Broyles Award as the best assistant coach in college football at Michigan. Learning the offense as the starter should help Van Dyke prepare for 2022.

In an ACC loaded with promising QBs for the 2022 season, 247 Sports ranked Van Dyke behind four other signal-callers. Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei was third overall nationally, Kedon Slovis of Pittsburgh fifth, Phil Jurkovec of Boston College sixth and Brennan Armstrong of Virginia seventh.

Three of the other four of the other QBs had coaching changes during the offseason. Virginia hired Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and Pittsburgh OC Mark Whipple left for Nebraska. Miami will play the Cavaliers, Tigers and Panthers in 2022. Boston College is not on the 2022 Miami schedule.

Those three games, plus the one at Texas A&M on September 17 will be critical for Van Dyke with the eyes of scouts, particularly on those games. Also working for Van Dyke is that Cristobal coached Chargers QB Justin Herbert who was the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Herbert was the 2020 NFL Rookie of the Year.
