The Miami Hurricanes could lose their offensive coordinator for the second offseason. Newly hired Miami OC Josh Gattis is expected to be one of the top head-coaching candidates for the 2023 season. Gattis won the Frank Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in college football with Michigan in 2021.

Gattis was hired away from Michigan by new Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal during the 2022 offseason. Six power five schools hired coordinators as their new head coaches for the 2022 season. That includes Oregon who hired Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning to succeed Cristobal.

Gattis has an excellent foundation to build around with the return of quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. Miami will have a new look at wide receiver after losing 2021 leading receivers Mike Harley and Charleston Rambo. The Miami Hurricanes will be deep at running back in 2021 led by returning rusher Jaylan Knighton.

Miami will likely have a more balanced offense in 2022 under Gattis than they had with the more pass-oriented system led by Rhett Lashlee in 2020 and 2021. Lashlee is the head coach at SMU. CBS Sports examined “Top college football coordinators who are ready to make the jump to becoming a Power Five head coach soon.”

"Josh Gattis, Miami OC“Gattis won the 2021 Broyles Award as the top assistant in college football for his work as Michigan’s offensive coordinator. The 38-year-old former Wake Forest safety is now the OC at Miami under Cristobal and will have a chance to shine as a play caller once again as the Hurricanes return stud quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. With prior stops at Alabama and Penn State also on his resume, Gattis has all the credentials needed to make the leap from Power Five coordinator to Power Five head coach.”"

David Cobb wrote the summary of Gattis and the other five coordinators he projects as being ready to make the jump to becoming a Power Five head coach. Gattis returns to the ACC where his roots began in college football. With four coaching changes in the ACC Coastal this season, Gattis would likely be hired outside the division.

The only Coastal program that would be likely to consider a coaching change after the 2022 season is Georgia Tech. Games at Clemson and Texas A&M this season will be closely watched for everyone with the Miami football program. All of the Hurricanes’ players and staff will be evaluated in their biggest 2022 games.

Gattis elevated the Michigan offense in 2021. Miami had an explosive offense in 2021. The challenge for Gattis will be to improve a rushing offense that was 97th nationally averaging 127.67 yards per game in 2021. Miami also has to improve it’s run blocking from 2021. That will be emphasized by Cristobal.
