Mario Cristobal expects culture set this time of year
Mario Cristobal is setting the culture in his first offseason as the Miami football coach. Cristobal was quoted in the Miami Herald by Barry Jackson that players are forming relationships and the returnees need to get going in the same direction. Players working out in the offseason and spending time together are critical.
Spending time together, conditioning and working out during the offseason are how teams build chemistry. Miami football alums have frequently spoken about the work they put in during the offseasons working together and on the Greentree Practice Fields. The U swag was developed there.
Miami signed 14 true freshmen and added 11 transfers during the 2022 offseason. Not everyone is on campus yet. The Miami players are having to adjust to a mostly new staff. That includes strength and conditioning coach Aaron Feld. Mario Cristobal has frequently spoken about changing the culture at Miami.
Nearly every new hire Miami has had as head coach has mentioned the importance of the culture. Cristobal has lived it and saw firsthand what it takes as a player and graduate assistant to succeed at Miami. Oregon improved from 6-6 to 9-4 in the first full season under Cristobal in 2018. Jackson quoted Cristobal.
"“We’ve got to get better. 7-5 is not the standard of Miami. We have to look ourselves in the mirror. This fall camp will be a truth-teller, will tell the truth to how much we have advanced. The neat thing is your culture gets really strong this time of year with team activities.You start forming relationships, have new guys coming in the building as well. You have to get these guys going in the same direction.”"
Cristobal and his staff will learn who fits into their system during fall camp. Several Miami football players transferred after spring practice for various reasons. Miami also added several transfers following the conclusion of spring practice. Cristobal is one of multiple new coaches at Power Five programs entering the 2022 season.
Miami will fuse the views the coaching staff has had from several programs and varying degrees of experience. Cristobal has been praised for hiring an elite coaching staff. This offseason could dictate the direction the Miami football program takes in the future. Cristobal has created a buzz for Miami entering the 2022 season.
