Miami baseball projected NCAA Tournament ninth national seed
The Miami baseball team fell to ninth in the projected NCAA Tournament bracket from D1Baseball.Com. Miami had been ranked as high as third by College Sports Madness in their baseball bracketology on May 23. The Hurricanes lost 9-6 to North Carolina State and 16-3 to Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament.
Miami was eliminated with the loss to North Carolina State. The Hurricanes could have padded their RPI with a victory over Wake Forest. Following the loss to Wake Forest, Miami fell from 10th to 15th in the RPI. Wake Forest moved up from 14th to ninth in the RPI. It appears Miami should still be safe hosting a regional.
The Miami baseball program has not hosted a regional since 2016 when they were the third seed nationally. Miami defeated Boston College in the Super Regional at home to advance to the College World Series. The 2022 NCAA Tournament selection show is on ESPN2 on Monday at noon eastern time.
Miami will enter the NCAA Tournament with six losses in their last eight games. Miami did defeat Notre Dame two out of three games in the last series of the regular season. Notre Dame won their pool in the ACC Tournament to reach the semifinals. Notre Dame moved up from 15th to eighth in the RPI after Friday’s games.
Miami is projected to host second-seeded Florida, third-seeded and Big East champion Connecticut and number four Florida A&M in the Coral Gables regional. Florida was playing Alabama for a spot in the SEC Tournament semifinals versus Texas A&M on Saturday. Florida won two out of three at Miami in March.
The Gators outscored the Hurricanes 19-4 to win the final two games of the series. Miami is projected as one of five national seeds from the ACC. Virginia Tech as the second national seed and Notre Dame at eight are the two ACC national seeds ahead of Miami. Louisville is 10th and North Carolina 13th.
If Miami can advance out of their projected regional, D1 Baseball would have them playing the winner of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi regional. Southern Mississippi is the top seed there with Georgia Tech, Alabama and Belmont the second through fourth seeds. Miami has a lot to improve before regional play next weekend.
