Miami baseball team hosting 2022 NCAA Regional
The Miami baseball team has earned a top 16 national seed and will host a regional next weekend as announced by the NCAA on Sunday night. Miami is hosting a regional for the first time since 2016. The Hurricanes also hosted the Super Regional in 2016 on their way to the College World Series in Omaha.
Miami finished the 2022 regular season 39-18 overall and 20-10 in the ACC. The 16 teams selected to host a regional were announced without the seeds being released. The NCAA will announce the full 64-team bracket and national seeds at Noon ET on Monday on ESPN2. Miami is one of four ACC teams hosting a regional.
Louisville, ACC tournament champion North Carolina and regular-season champion Virginia Tech are the other three ACC teams who will host a regional. Miami swept North Carolina in March at home and lost two out of three at Virginia Tech last month. The Hurricanes are 15th in the RPI entering Monday.
Miami seemed likely to be seeded in the top eight. The top eight national seeds host the super regional if they advance. North Carolina is third, Virginia Tech fifth, Wake Forest sixth and Notre Dame 13th in the RPI as the ACC teams ahead of Miami. Miami was fifth in the RPI at the end of the regular season on May 21.
Despite pummeling Miami 16-3 in the ACC Tournament after both teams were eliminated by North Carolina State and having a higher RPI than the Hurricanes, Wake Forest is not hosting a regional. Miami lost 9-6 to North Carolina State in its first ACC Tournament game that decided Pool C.
Miami will enter the NCAA Tournament with six losses in their last eight games. North Carolina State lost to North Carolina in the ACC Tournament Championship Game. The Wolfpack will play in the NCAA Tournament. NC State is 33rd in the RPI. Miami is projected to host Rutgers, Texas Tech and Binghamton in the regional.
The projections are from D1Baseball.Com. Miami swept Rutgers in three games to begin the 2021 season but did not play in 2022. Rutgers will enter the NCAA Tournament with a 44-15 record, Texas Tech is 37-20 and Binghamton 22-28 but in the postseason after winning the America East Tournament.
