CBS Sports names Miami Hurricanes QB room top 10
The Miami Hurricanes quarterback room was named in the top 10 by CBS Sports. CBS named a top five in order of Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia and LSU. Miami, SMU, Penn State, Texas and Texas A&M were named as honorable mentions in no particular order. Miami plays at Texas A&M on September 17.
Tyler Van Dyke leads the Miami QB room. Van Dyke is an early 2022 Heisman Trophy candidate. Miami has added depth to the QB room in the last two classes. Jake Garcia signed in 2021 and Jacurri Brown in 2022. Van Dyke completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2021.
Garcia completed 11 passes in 14 attempts for 147 yards, two TDs and no interceptions with one carry for 45 yards in his sole playing time against Central Connecticut State last season. Garcia will be the primary backup to Van Dyke in 2022. Miami also has fourth-year sophomore Peyton Matocha on the roster.
Matocha has not thrown a pass in his Miami career and has five rushing attempts for 18 yards. It would take injuries to Van Dyke, Garcia and potentially Brown for him to get extensive playing time. All four should play in the Miami season opener versus Bethune-Cookman on September 3.
"Miami: “Tyler Van Dyke is a Heisman contender, but backup Jake Garcia is a blue-chip recruit who has shown some real signs in Coral Gables. Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis should do wonders with this group.”"
Garcia is the highest-rated QB and sixth most talented player overall on the Miami Hurricanes roster. Van Dyke is second and Brown third according to 247 Sports. Brown brings another dimension to the Miami roster as an exceptional runner. Brown ran for 4,205 with 54 TDs and 18 100-yard games during his high school career.
Miami has a bright future at QB with Brown and Garcia behind Van Dyke. All three provide Miami with different skill sets. Gattis will ask Van Dyke to do different things than were required from him under previous offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee. The QBs on the roster likely played a role in Gattis leaving Michigan for Miami.
