Top edge rushing prospect Jaxon Howard will announce his college commitment on July 1. Howard tweeted the information on Wednesday night. The Miami football program is one of the four finalists with LSU, Michigan and Minnesota. There is no prohibitive favorite to receive the commitment from Howard.

Minnesota is listed as the favorite by On3.Com to sign Howard at 26 percent, Miami is second at 22.7, LSU at 15.7 and Minnesota at 9.9. Howard played defensive end and tight end for Robbinsdale Cooper High School in New Hope, Minnesota. Howard ranks as the 96th player, 11th edge rusher and first in Minnesota.

On3 lists Howard as the 102nd player, seventh TE and best player in Minnesota. Rivals lists Howard as the fifth-best TE. Miami projects Howard as an edge rusher. The 247 Sports projection is that Howard is best suited for defense with the ideal frame at 6’4, 245 pounds. Howard will take his official visit to Miami June 24.

Minnesota received an official visit from Howard last weekend. Howard will visit Michigan this weekend and LSU on June 21 before the official visit to Miami. Initially recruited as a TE, teams now see Howard long-term as an edge rusher. Howard is coached by his father Willie who was a second-round pick in the 2001 NFL Draft.

Three-star LB Bobby Washington is the only 2023 Miami football commit on defense. Expect Miami to make the defensive line a priority. Miami signed two DL in the Class of 2022 and have added five transfers upfront on defense during the offseason. Howard would be the highest-ranked 2023 Miami commit.

The 2023 Miami class currently ranks 42nd per the 247 Sports composite team rankings. Howard would be a huge boost to the 2023 Miami class. The ability to team Howard with 2022 signees Nyjalik Kelly and Cyrus Moss would have the potential to provide Miami with an elite pass rush in the future.
