Former Miami point guard Charlie Moore will have a difficult time making the Pistons roster after signing with Detroit for their summer league team. Moore averaged 12.4 points per game, 2.4 rebounds and led the ACC with 75 steals during the 2021-22 season. Detroit will begin summer league play on July 7 at midnight ET in Las Vegas.

Detroit drafted point guard Jaden Ivey with the fifth pick. Guard Cade Cunningham was the first pick by Detroit in the 2021 NBA Draft and was third in the NBA Rookie of the Year balloting. Detroit has seven guards on its roster. A strong performance in Las Vegas will help Moore get the attention of other teams.

If Charlie Moore doesn’t make the Detroit roster, he will have a chance with other teams. Moore began his college career at California, transferred to Kansas where he spent two seasons, then two years with DePaul and finally Miami for the 2021-22 season. Moore was a great leader for Miami this season.

The leadership skills Moore showed with Miami advancing to the first NCAA Tournament regional final in program history and his ability to run a team are skills that will help the Chicago native earn a chance to make the Detroit roster or be signed somewhere else. Moore had a 2.22 assist to turnover ratio in 2021-22.

At 5’11, 180 pounds, Moore’s size could also work against him. Ivey is 6’4 and 195 pounds. The average height of an NBA point guard was 6.2.5 in 2021-22. Moore is a steady player that does almost everything well but is not exceptional in any one area. Getting into the right system will be critical for Moore.

Moore earned honorable mention All-ACC and finished fourth in the conference Defensive Player of the Year balloting. The on-ball defense Moore will provide and his ability to create turnovers will be an asset to teams at the next level. In just one season with the Miami basketball program, Moore created a lasting legacy.
