Miami football gains commit from 5-star edge rusher Jayden Wayne

The Miami football program gained a commitment from five-star edge rusher, Jayden Wayne, on Saturday. Wayne is the second five-star commit to Miami in less than a week. Offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa committed to Miami on July 4. Miami moved up to the ninth-ranked 2023 recruiting class with the Wayne commitment.

Wayne chose Miami over Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan State and Oregon. Wayne is the first defensive lineman committed to Miami for 2023. Miami commits have been heavy on the offensive side. Defensive back Robert Stafford and linebacker Bobby Washington were the previous two 2023 Miami defensive commits.

The addition of Wayne continues the upgrade of the Miami DL. Wayne is the ninth DL commit or signee in the last seven months. Miami signed three DL in the 2022 class and added five transfers during the 2022 offseason. Wayne is the 30th ranked player, fifth edge rusher and ninth in Florida in the Class of 2023.

Miami is beginning to build a pipeline with IMG Academy. Wayne is the third player in the 2023 Class from IMG to commit to Miami. Mauigoa and four-star tight end Riley Williams will be teammates with Wayne at IMG this fall. Miami flipped four-star IMG TE Jaleel Skinner from Alabama in the 2022 Class.

As a junior at Tacoma Lincoln in 2021, Wayne had 44 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and nine sacks. An elite athlete, Wayne also had 18 receptions for 269 yards and five touchdowns. At IMG, Wayne will concentrate on defense where his future is. The Miami football program has exceptional depth in the future at edge rusher.

Four-star prospects Nyjalik Kelly and Cyrus Moss were ranked in the top 15 edge rushers in the Class of 2022. Miami also added edge rushers Mitchell Agude from UCLA and Akheem Mesidor from West Virginia. Agude has only one season of eligibility remaining and Mesidor has the option of entering the 2023 NFL Draft.
