Miami football still searching for first 2023 DT commitment
The commitment from four-star edge rusher Jayden Wayne on Saturday was the first for the Miami football program from a defensive lineman in the 2023 recruiting class. Miami is still searching for its first defensive tackle commit in 2023. Four-star DL Reuben Bain could be the first Miami DT commit for 2023.
Bain primarily lined up as an edge rusher as a junior in 2021 according to Andrew Ivins of 247 Sports. In his evaluation of Bain, Ivins projects that Bain has the build to move inside and play tackle in college. Bain had 53 tackles, 31 tackles for loss and 19.5 sacks as a junior for Miami Central in 2021.
Three-star signee Ahmad Moten was the only DT Miami signed in the 2022 class. During the offseason, Miami added transfer DL Darrell Jackson from Maryland, Jacob Lichtenstein from USC and Antonio Moultrie from UAB. Jackson is a DT. Lichtenstein and Moultrie can play end and tackle. Lichtenstein and Moultrie have one season left.
Jackson who signed with Maryland in the Class of 2021 has three seasons of eligibility remaining. Miami will need to continue adding depth at DT in the Class of 2023. The Hurricanes are deeper at edge rusher than tackle projecting beyond the 2022 season. The DT depth is led by 2022 sophomore Leonard Taylor.
The Miami football program could add transfers during the 2023 offseason depending on the development of the DTs behind Taylor during the 2022 season. Jackson is expected to be a big part of the future for Miami at DT. Jared Harrison-Hunte and Taylor are the projected starting DTs for Miami during the 2022 season.
Jackson, Lichtenstein and Moultrie all all expected to be key contributors for Miami on the DL and part of the rotation at DT. Miami needs better production from its DL in 2022. Bain is the only 2023 prospect projected to play DT in college that is currently trending to Miami. Three-star DL Connor Knight is strongly considering Miami.
