Miami Hurricanes 12th in CBS Sports 2021-22 Best in College Sports

The Miami Hurricanes finished 12th in the CBS Sports 2021-22 Best in College Sports. CBS Sports utilizes a weighted formula that includes Football and Men’s and Women’s basketball plus two wild card spots to rank athletic programs. Miami finished 7-5 in 2021 and the basketball teams both won NCAA Tournament games.

The Miami football team had to opt out of its Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game against Washington State due to a Covid outbreak. Miami finished 26-11 overall and 14-6 and in fourth place in the ACC in Men’s Basketball. The Hurricanes advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional final.

The NCAA Tournament run was the deepest in Miami basketball history. Miami finished 21-13 overall and 10-8 in the ACC in women’s basketball. The Miami women’s basketball team advanced to the ACC Championship Game following upsets of Louisville in the quarterfinals and Notre Dame in the Semifinals.

Miami defeated South Florida in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament. The Miami men and women both lost to the eventual national champion in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Kansas eliminated the men. South Carolina ousted the women in Columbia in the second round.

Sports with a greater interest like football and men’s and women’s basketball were weighted more heavily by CBS. Several sports like baseball for the Miami Hurricanes have a more regional interest. The wild cards from what CBS referred to as a school’s most successful spectator sports.

The weighted formula puts 2.5 times the emphasis on football and two times on men’s basketball than the other sports. Teams that do not finish in the final AP top 25 for football but play in a bowl are given 62.5 points (25 x 2.5) per CBS Sports. Miami received 62.5 for football despite opting out of the Sun Bowl.

In addition to football, Miami received 156 points for the men’s basketball team, 50 points each for the women’s basketball team and first wildcard and 37.5 for the second wildcard. Neither of the Miami wildcards were named. The Miami Hurricanes athletic department finished with a total of 356 points.

Notre Dame which finished second overall with 512.5 points led all ACC programs. North Carolina was second in the ACC with 470.5 points and Miami was third. Florida finished 36th with 275.5 points and Florida State 65th with 165. Florida State earned the 2016-17 title. Michigan won the 2021-22 title with 588.5 points.
