The Miami football team is ranked 17th in the USA Today preseason coaches poll released on Monday. Miami received 433 points in the poll. The Hurricanes were 17 points behind ACC Coastal division rival Pittsburgh who is 16th. Miami was the dominant favorite to win the Coastal division by ACC writers last month.
Miami is fourth out of the five ACC teams ranked in the poll. Clemson is fourth, North Carolina State 13th and Wake Forest as the other ACC teams ranked in the coaches’ poll. Clemson, Pittsburgh and Texas A&M who is ranked seventh are the only opponents on the 2022 Miami schedule ranked in the preseason top 25.
The Associated Press media top 25 will be released on August 15 at noon eastern time. As expected Alabama is ranked number one, followed by Ohio State and defending national champion Georgia. Miami was 2-2 in 2021 against the programs that are beginning the 2022 season in the top 25.
Miami lost to Alabama and Michigan State and defeated North Carolina State and Pittsburgh. Miami will play at Clemson and Texas A&M and host Pittsburgh this season. Mario Cristobal left behind an Oregon program which is ranked 12th to return home and take over the Miami football program.
Miami will begin the season hosting Bethune-Cookman and Southern Mississippi before playing at Texas A&M in week three. The Hurricanes finish non-conference play at home against Middle Tennessee State. Miami began the 2021 season ranked 14th nationally. Miami fell out of the poll following week three in 2021.
This is the fifth time in the last six years Miami has been ranked to begin the season. Miami did not begin the 2019 season in the top 25. Miami was first ranked in the preseason poll in 1955 when they began the season ninth. When Miami plays at Texas A&M the potential is for it to be a game between two top 10 teams.
