Miami Football is Tight end U in 2022 ESPN rankings
The Miami football program continues as the best school producing tight ends in the 2022 rankings by ESPN. Miami finished first ahead of Iowa, Stanford, Florida and Missouri which are ranked as the second through fifth best programs producing TEs. Will Mallory returns for Miami in his second season as the starting Miami TE.
Mallory set career highs with 30 receptions for 347 yards and four touchdowns. New Miami offensive coordinator Josh Gattis has higher expectations for Mallory in 2022. Miami has had 21 TEs drafted in its history. Brevin Jordan who currently plays for the Houston Texas was the most recent Miami TE drafted in 2021.
Miami is on a run of signing excellent TEs. Elijah Arroyo is entering his second season and the Hurricanes have commitments from three TEs for 2023. That includes Riley Williams who is the third-ranked TE In the Class of 2023. Expect Gattis to use multiple formations to get TEs more involved in the offense this season.
Willie Smith in 1985 and Kellen Winslow II in 2003 are the only two consensus All-American TEs Miami has produced. Jordan was a finalist for the Mackey Award in 2020 honoring the best TE. The award began in 2000 and Winslow is the only Miami honoree. Mallory is the on preseason 2022 Mackey Award Watch List.
"TEU is Miami“Sure, other schools have made a recent run at this honor — from Iowa to Stanford to UCLA. But even if Miami hasn’t produced anyone of the caliber of George Kittle in recent years, the run of talent at this position remains impressive. The Canes have had 13 tight ends drafted since 2000, including first-rounders Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow, Greg Olsen and David Njoku. Will Mallory could be the next breakout star this season, or perhaps blue-chip 2022 signee Jaleel Skinner bursts onto the scene.Regardless, Miami’s position as Tight End U isn’t in doubt for the foreseeable future.”"
Arroyo, Mallory and Skinner could play together in certain formations this season. Miami will more frequently use two TE formations. When Gattis was the OC at Michigan last season, TE Eric All had 38 receptions for 437 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan did not use TEs as frequently in 2020.
Miami also finished in the top 10 at defensive back and RB. Miami is deep at RB and safety entering 2022. The Hurricanes CBs other than Tyrique Stevenson have more to prove. Miami has traditionally produced more elite safeties than CBs. Ed Reed is a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Sean Taylor had his own legendary career.
