Tyler Van Dyke was named the 11th best quarterback in College Football in rankings released by Athlon Sports on Wednesday. Athlon Sports ranked all 131 QBs in the Football Bowl Subdivision. After starting nine games last season. Van Dyke can break several Miami single-season records with the same averages as 2021.
Tyler Van Dyke should make runs at the passing records set by Bernie Kosar with 3,642 yards in 1984 and Steve Walsh with 29 touchdowns in 1988. If Miami did not have to opt out of the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl last season Van Dyke would have had a chance to at least tie the passing TD record set by Walsh.
Van Dyke is part of an elite group of ACC QBs in 2022. Devin Leary of North Carolina State, Sam Hartman from Wake Forest and Van Dyke were the top three choices for ACC Preseason Player of the Year as chosen by the media. Wake Forest announced on Wednesday Hartman will miss the beginning of the season.
Miami does not play North Carolina State or Wake Forest this season. The Hurricanes defeated the Wolfpack 31-30 in 2021 in an epic showdown between Van Dyke and Leary. Van Dyke finished 14th nationally averaging 293.1 passing yards per game in 2021. Van Dyke needs to average 280 yards per game to break Kosar’s record.
"11. Tyler Van Dyke, MiamiWake Forest’s Sam Hartman, NC State’s Devin Leary, Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong and Van Dyke all have a claim to the No. 1 spot among ACC quarterbacks going into 2022. So while Van Dyke ranks No. 4 here, there’s very little separation between him and the top trio.Van Dyke wasn’t expected to play a ton of snaps last season but was pressed into the starting role after D’Eriq King was lost for the year due to injury. The Connecticut native made his first start against Central Connecticut State (270 yards and three touchdowns) but was held in check (203 yards and a score) in a 30-28 loss at Virginia the following week. However, Van Dyke got better with every snap, as he posted back-to-back strong performances against NC State (325 yards and four scores) and Pitt (426 yards and three touchdowns). He finished the year with at least 300 passing yards and three scores through the air in each of the last four contests, giving him 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns in 10 appearances.Van Dyke led the ACC in completions of 50-plus yards (10) and yards per attempt (9.0), while connecting on 62.3 percent of his passes. Transitioning to new play-caller Josh Gattis and a revamped receiving corps are the only concerns for Van Dyke after a strong debut for the ‘Canes in ’21."
Armstrong and Virginia will match up against Van Dyke and Miami on October 29 in Charlottesville. Virginia had a prolific offense in 2021 led by Armstrong. Former Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott was hired as the new Virginia head coach entering 2022. The 300 yards and three TD passes were actually over the last six games.
Joe Burrow for LSU in 2019 when he led the Tigers to the National Championship and won the Heisman Trophy is the only other player with 300 yards and three TD passes in six straight games during the College Football Playoff era. Miami has to replace 2021 leading receiver Charleston Rambo and Mike Harley.
The Hurricanes added former Clemson wide receiver Frank Ladson and return 2021 starter, Key’Shawn Smith. Xavier Restrepo will take over as the starter in the slot for Harley and could lead Miami in receptions. In the Gattis offense expect Van Dyke to be more efficient with fewer passes downfield.
