Head coach Mario Cristobal told reporters after practice on Monday that true freshman running back Tre’Vonte Citizen suffered a significant injury during the Miami Hurricanes scrimmage on Saturday. No timetable was mentioned on how long Citizen will be out or what the injury could be.

The injury is believed to be to Citizen’s knee. Citizen had been challenging more experienced RBs in the Miami Hurricanes rotation during training camp this month. The Miami Hurricanes return third-year sophomores Don Chaney Jr. and Jaylan Knighton after they missed spring practice with their own injuries.

True sophomore Thad Franklin also returns for Miami this season. Miami added former Mississippi RB Henry Parrish during the offseason. Knighton and Parrish have reportedly been the two best RBs for Miami during training camp. An extended absence from Citizen would leave Miami with the other four mentioned RBs.

New offensive coordinator is trying to improve a Miami rushing offense that was 97th in 2021 averaging 127.67 yards per game. Gattis led the Michigan offense to 214.36 rushing yards per game and 15th nationally last season. Gattis won the Broyles Award as the best assistant in college football in 2021.

"“Tre’vonte is a little bit more significant and we’ll continue to assess and evaluate and it’s gonna require some time and we’ll give a full you know description of it when it’s time but it’s, it’s significant I think we saw that.”"

Last week while speaking to reporters Gattis said that Miami will utilize the RBs based on the feel of the game. Knighton led Miami in 2021 with 561 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Citizen is the highest-rated RB on the Miami roster. The 247 Sports composite rankings had Citizen as the ninth best RB in the Class of 2022.

If Citizen is out for a significant length of time as appears likely, Miami cannot afford another injury at RB. Miami spent most of the 2021 season with three or four healthy RBs. Knighton had to carry the load for the majority of the second half of 2021. Gattis prefers to use about three RBs in the rotation and Miami needs the depth too.
