The Miami football team is 16th in the 2022 Associated Press top 25 preseason rankings. Miami is also 16th in the all-time preseason rankings as posted by the College Football News on Monday. Florida State is 10th all-time in the preseason rankings leading the ACC. Miami was 16th in the 2021 all-time preseason rankings.
Florida State received 685 points in the all-time poll to remain 10th from the 2021 all-time preseason rankings. The Miami football program has 555 all-time points. Oklahoma leads the all-time preseason rankings with 1,244 points. Florida remained 12th from the 2021 preseason rankings with 625 points all-time.
Miami is ranked in the preseason for the fifth time in the last six years. Among other Miami rivals, Notre Dame moved up from fifth to fourth with 996 all-time points. Not surprisingly Ohio State is second in the all-time preseason rankings and Alabama is third. The Associated Press began ranking teams throughout the season in 1936.
Both the Associated Press through the media and United Press International through the coaches poll which is now conducted by USA Today began ranking teams in the preseason in 1950 when the second of the two polls also started as a whole. Clemson which is 20th is the only other ACC program in the all-time poll.
Miami’s ACC Coastal Division rival Pittsburgh just missed the rankings at 26th, one spot behind Iowa. Miami was in a tight race from 13 through 16 with Tennessee who has 592 points all-time, Georgia with 590 and Auburn who has 581 points in the all-time preseason rankings in that order.
Under Mario Cristobal and with some instability at Auburn and Tennessee, Miami should have a good chance to move up the rankings in the next few years. Tennessee is 26th in the 2022 preseason rankings and Auburn is 36th. Auburn and Tennessee would not receive points in the College Football News system.
If Miami is ranked as high as 16th entering the 2023 season and Auburn is unranked, the Hurricanes would pass the Tigers in the all-time rankings. Miami and Auburn have a home and home scheduled in 2029 and 2030. Miami and Tennessee have not played since a home-and-home between 2002 and 2003.
