Corey Flagg who led the Miami football team with 60 tackles in 2021 is having the best training camp among the linebackers according to his position coach and co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. Flagg also contributed seven tackles for loss, three sacks, one pass breakup and one interception in 2021.

Corey Flagg is primarily competing with UCLA transfer Caleb Johnson and 2021 Miami second leading tackler Waynmon Steed to start at LB in 2022. Freshman Wesley Bissainthe and sophomore Chase Smith are other LBs to watch for Miami. Flagg signed was a three-star signee with Miami in the Class of 2020.

Corey Flagg was the 830th ranked player, 35th inside LB and 102nd in Texas in 2020. After playing in eight games as a true freshman in 2020, Flagg started all 12 games in 2021. Flagg is a third-year sophomore in 2022 after receiving an extra year of eligibility granted to all athletes during the 2020-21 school year.

Flagg had his best game in 2021 versus Michigan State with four solo tackles, four assists, 1.5 TFLs and one sack. Entering the 2022 season, Flagg is poised to be a leader. Flagg has clearly made an effort to understand the new defense being installed by Strong and co-defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

"“With all the backers I would say that Corey’s had the best camp and the thing he is a student of the game. Is always studying and always want to meet. He come in our meetings, coach did you have a few minutes for me? That’s what I really like about him because he has put so much time into it…Then when he gets on the field it’s just that he plays because he has an idea of what’s going on that’s the thing at linebacker if you can able to just read your keys and play with good technique and good fundamentals then you have a chance and that’s what Corey’s been able to do because he has just studied it so much.”"

Flagg and Johnson are both ILBs. Steele has stated the goal defensively is to get the 11 best players on the field. Flagg and Johnson will play together if they are the two best LBs. Gilbert Frierson and Keontra Smith return for Miami to play the defensive back/LB hybrid star position that replaces striker.

Next. Miami will play two best LBs regardless of position. dark

With 40-year coaches Steele and Strong running the Miami defense and LBs, the play at the position should improve. Flagg, Johnson and Steed provide Miami with experience at LB entering the 2022 season. Bissainthe could earn playing time as a true freshman as the most talent LB on the Miami roster.
