Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald quoted head coach Mario Cristobal discussing that a bigger staff is better. Jackson reported that the current Miami football staff is the biggest in program history. Cristobal learned during his stint on the Alabama staff taught him about the importance of a big staff.

Miami is utilizing experienced analysts on the staff with a lot of history as coaches and players. The addition of Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor as an analyst is the biggest name new to the Miami coaching staff. Mario Cristobal is clearly building a staff similar to how Nick Saban has built Alabama.

In building his Miami staff, Cristobal hired former Alabama assistants Kevin Steele and Charlie Strong as co-defensive coordinators. Taylor played one season under Saban with the Dolphins. Cristobal and his staff have installed a more business-like approach. Multiple Miami players have spoken about the difference in culture.

Mario Cristobal is a presence and is quickly imparting his culture throughout the Miami football program. During Miami media day quarterback Tyler Van Dyke credited Cristobal with an intensity the players feel when he walks in a room and that the level of discipline has been raised with the new staff.

"“Going to Alabama” ‘reaffirmed and confirmed a lot of things I knew…A monstrosity of a staff and being able to take that over to the West Coast [at Oregon was beneficial]. Now that we’re investing in the program the way we’re investing in it, it’s exciting.’"

Jackson quoted Cristobal above. It relates to the comment Cristobal made when hired by Miami that coaching at Alabama under Saban was like getting a Ph.D. in football. No coach has received the financial dedication to the Miami football program. New athletic director Dan Radakovich spoke about facility upgrades on Tuesday.

Miami has quietly been raising money during the offseason for facility upgrades that include the Soffer Indoor Practice facility field being increased to 100 yards. Jackson stated that the size of the Miami football staff also includes support staff. Recruiting staffs can often be the size of NFL personnel departments.

Cristobal has a commanding presence. Steele said earlier this summer that Cristobal is a natural leader who doesn’t have to act like he is in charge. The Herald quoted Steele as saying that Cristobal being in charge is evident in his personality and the way he communicates. Cristobal has stressed the importance of details.

The new saying for the Miami football program is how you do anything is how you do everything. That permeates throughout the Hurricanes’ coaching staff, players and everyone working for the Miami football program. Hiring the big staff clearly helps Cristobal feel like Miami is investing in the program.
