The Miami football program remained 13th in the 2022 team talent composite rankings posted by 247 Sports. Miami was also 13th in the 2021 rankings. The Miami football roster is second in the ACC behind Clemson. Per 247 Sports “the Team Talent Composite also does not yet consider 247Sports’ transfer rankings.”

Originally five-star signees defensive tackle Leonard Taylor and safety James Williams are the highest-rated players on the 2022 Miami roster. Miami has a 55 percent blue chip ratio with 45 players on its roster that were four or five-star signees. Miami should move up in the talent composite rankings under Mario Cristobal.

Miami signed the 16th ranked 2022 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Being in the top 16 of the team talent composite significantly increases the chance for Miami to earn a college football playoff berth. Since 2015 all but Michigan State in 2016, Washington in 2017 and Cincinnati in 2021 were in the top 16.

Chris Hummer of 247 Sports opined that 15 to 20 teams each season have a legitimate chance to make the college football playoff. Miami is one of 16 teams with an average player ranking of at least 89 according to the 247 Sports rankings. The average Miami player is 89.65. Miami is named as a team that has underperformed.

"No. 13 Miami: “Mario Cristobal has everything he needs to make a run in Year 1. The Hurricanes are the second-most talented team in the ACC and the only other team besides Clemson to rank among the top 15. Miami has only been to one ACC Championship game since it joined the league in 2004.”"

Miami opens the 2022 season ranked 16th in the Associated Press Top 25 and 17th in the coaches poll. The Hurricanes are one of 11 out of the top 16 teams in the team talent composite who begin the season in the national rankings. Miami begins the season as the favorite to win the last year of the ACC Coastal Division.
