Following the 70-13 win by the Miami football team over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday CBS Sports issued a report card for the Hurricanes. Analysis of the Hurricanes’ victory over the Wildcats was also provided by CBS Sports partner site 247 Sports. Mario Cristobal led Miami to an impressive win in his Hurricanes’ debut.
Miami utilized a balanced offense with 305 yards rushing and 300 passing. The Miami defense allowed 342 yards to Bethune-Cookman. It wasn’t a perfect performance. Cristobal was upset with a turnover inside the Bethune-Cookman five-yardline and some untimely penalties. Miami hosts Southern Mississippi on Saturday.
It is difficult to grade a Power Five team in any game versus an FCS opponent. The Power Five team has nothing to gain and everything to lose. Miami was able to play over 70 players in the win over Bethune-Cookman. There are still a lot of questions to be answered for Miami on Saturday versus Bethune-Cookman.
The analysis from 247 Sports and CBS for each team was light following a busy day of college football. The Miami football team has a lot to clean up following the red zone turnover and six penalties for 48 yards, one of which gave Bethune-Cookman a first down. After the game, Cristobal was pleased to begin the season 1-0.
"Grade: B+“247Sports: In head coach Mario Cristobal’s debut in Miami, the Hurricanes defeated Bethune-Cookman by a score of 70-13. Miami plays Southern Miss at home next weekend.CBS Sports: “The Hurricanes topped Bethune-Cookman 70-13, Tyler Van Dyke threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns and the defense gave up just 13 first downs. Per my arbitrary rules, a team can’t earn an ‘A’ unless it plays an FBS opponent.”"
The quarterback play from Van Dyke and Jake Garcia was exceptional on Saturday. Van Dyke and Garcia completed 21 of 24 passes with three TDs and no interceptions. Miami will be able to make more of a statement when they host Southern Mississippi. Liberty beat Southern Miss 29-27 in four overtimes on Saturday.
Miami is a prohibitive favorite versus Southern Mississippi. The Hurricanes will not be expected to dominate as much versus the Golden Eagles as they did against Bethune-Cookman. It is another game Miami has far less to gain than loss. Miami needs a convincing win and to look impressive in the victory.
