The Miami football team passed North Carolina State to move into second in the 247 Sports ACC power rankings. Only Clemson is ranked ahead of Miami. Miami was impressive in their first game under Mario Cristobal with a 70-13 win over Bethune-Cookman. ESPN ranks Miami 13th nationally in the power rankings.

Miami and NC State flipped second and third place in the 247 Sports ACC Power Rankings. Pittsburgh who is projected to be the main challenger for the Miami football team in the ACC Coastal Division is fourth in the conference power rankings. Miami used a balanced offense in their season opener.

The Hurricanes had 305 yards rushing and 281 passing. Four different Miami running backs scored seven rushing touchdowns. Mississippi transfer Henry Parrish led Miami with 14 carries for 108 yards and two TDs with three receptions for 21 yards. Miami gets RB Jaylan Knighton back this week from an injury.

Xavier Restrepo was the top Miami receiver versus Bethune-Cookman with five receptions for 100 yards and a TD. Expect more of that as the season continues. None of the Miami receivers established themselves over anyone else versus Bethune-Cookman. Sam Marsdale of 247 Sports summarized Miami.

"2. MIAMI HURRICANES (3)“Miami was high-flying in its first game under Mario Cristobal. The Hurricanes put up 70 points in a rout of Bethune-Cookman. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was not asked to do much, but he was solid. He went 13-of-16 passing for 198 yards and two touchdowns. The ‘Canes welcome Southern Mississippi before a showdown at Texas A&M, which is the one everyone has circled on the calendar. Southern Miss enters off a heartbreaking 29-27 loss in overtime to Liberty.”"

The Miami offense was efficient versus Bethune-Cookman. Miami allowed too many big plays defensively. Bethune-Cookman had four plays over 25 yards. The Hurricanes are 114th allowing 9.2 yards per pass attempt. That came after playing an FCS opponent. We likely won’t truly find out about Miami until week three.

The game at Texas A&M on September 17 and Clemson on November 19 should be the seminal games of the 2022 season for Miami. A win over either the Aggies, Tigers, or both should have Miami in contention for a New Year’s Day bowl berth at least. Miami needs to continue the momentum versus Southern Mississippi.
