Miami football: Kevin Steele named ACC coordinator of the week
Following a stellar defensive performance at Texas A&M, Kevin Steele was named the ACC Coordinator of the Week by On3.Com. The defense kept the Miami football team in the game. In a defensive struggle, the Miami offense had three field goals in four trips inside the red zone against Texas A&M.
The Miami defense forced Texas A&M to punt six times. Texas A&M gained 118 yards on those six drives. The Aggies averaged 5.1 yards per play. Safety James Williams led the Miami defense with seven tackles and two pass breakups. Miami is 15th nationally allowing 12.3 points per game after week three.
The Hurricanes are 23rd nationally allowing 279 yards per game. After hosting Middle Tennessee this week, Miami has a bye week. Miami will begin ACC play on October 8 against North Carolina. The Tar Heels are ranked fifth nationally averaging 547.3 yards per game and likely the best offense Miami will face in 2022.
Miami only allowed over 300 yards in the season opener when virtually the entire roster played. The Hurricanes rank eighth in total defense versus FBS opponents. Miami produced six tackles for loss and three sacks against Texas A&M. The Hurricanes are going to need to continue that pressure versus Power Five opponents.
"ACCMiami DC Kevin Steele“The buzz: Miami’s loss to Texas A&M wasn’t because of its defense. Steele’s unit held the Aggies to 264 yards and 4-of-12 on third downs during the 17-9 loss. One of A&M’s two touchdowns came on a short field, courtesy of a turnover that gave the Aggies the ball at the Hurricanes’ 28.”"
Matt Zenitz summarized the performance the Miami defense had versus Texas A&M. Former Miami football head coach Manny Diaz was named the Big 10 coordinator of the week after Penn State had six sacks and four takeaways in a 41-12 win at Auburn on Saturday. Steele was previously the DC at Auburn.
Diaz and Steele were two of seven coordinators honored after week three. Five of the seven coordinators were on defense. Steele has over 40 years of experience as a collegiate and professional coach. Steele was the head coach at Baylor from 1999 through 2022. Steele played linebacker at Tennessee from 1978-79.
