The losses of Jacolby George and Xavier Restrepo for about six weeks have left the Miami football team with seven scholarship wide receivers. Head coach Mario Cristobal said on Wednesday that freshman tight end Jaleel Skinner can play in-line, off the ball, and outside. Don’t expect anyone to move to WR full-time.

Starting TE Will Mallory and second-team Elijah Arroyo have the athleticism to line up play in-line, off the ball, and outside but the expectations should be that they remain at their position. Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis could choose to use two or three TEs formations more often.

Restrepo leads Miami with 11 receptions and 172 yards. Three Miami WRs are tied with one TD. Brashard Smith leads the healthy Miami WRs with nine receptions and Michael Redding III tops the remaining Hurricanes with 105 receiving yards. Cristobal said they will examine different ways to get players the ball.

Smith is a versatile player to watch that has 79 receiving yards and two carries for 13 yards this season. Cristobal mentioned that they have primarily given reps to the first and second-team players in practice this week without naming anyone specifically. Redding III, Smith and Key’Shawn Smith started at WR versus Texas A&M.

Key’Shawn Smith has been a big play receiver for the the Miami football team this season with three receptions for more than 15 yards and one of 25 plus that went for a touchdown versus Southern Mississippi two weeks ago. Restrepo has four of 15 plus and one 25 plus. Miami needs a more big-play offense.

Mallory led Miami with six receptions for 56 yards versus Texas A&M. That was an encouraging sign after Mallory had two receptions for 21 yards in the season opener versus Bethune-Cookman in the season opener and was shutout versus Southern Mississippi. Miami needs Mallory to be a bigger part of the offense with Restrepo out.
