Miami football 1 of 8 preseason top 25 teams with at least 2 losses
The Miami football team has company as a preseason top 25 team with two or more losses through week five this season. Four of those teams were ranked ahead of Miami to begin the 2022 season and three were below the Hurricanes. Included is Texas A&M who defeated Miami in College Station 17-9 on September 17.
Miami began the 2022 season 2-0 before back-to-back losses to Texas A&M and Middle Tennessee State 45-31 prior to the bye week this past weekend. North Carolina plays at Miami on Saturday. The Tar Heels improved to 4-1 with a 41-10 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday. Miami begins ACC play versus North Carolina.
The Miami football team’s loss to Middle Tennessee State was one of four by the preseason top 25 teams with two losses to a Group of Five team. Notre Dame lost to Marshall and Texas A&M was defeated by Appalachian State on September 10, Houston lost to Tulane on Friday night and the Miami loss to Middle Tennessee State.
Arkansas is the only one of the eight teams ranked in the preseason with at least two losses that is currently in the top 25. The Razorbacks are 25th in the USA Today Coaches poll. Miami plummeted from 13th to 25th after the loss to Texas A&M and out of the top 25 with the loss to Middle Tennessee State.
Miami has work to do to get back into the top 25. The Hurricanes did not receive any votes for the second straight week. Miami’s loss to Middle Tennessee State will likely linger for a couple of weeks. Miami probably needs to defeat North Carolina and at least Virginia Tech on October 15 to have a chance to get back into the top 25.
North Carolina is under others receiving votes. Clemson who is ranked fifth this week is the only ranked team on the Miami schedule after Florida State dropped out following its loss to Wake Forest. Miami plays at Clemson on November 19 and hosts Florida State on November 5. Miami was ranked the first three weeks in 2021.
