Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Miami Hurricanes’ quarterback Tyler Van Dyke said the offense needs to create more big plays in order to run a more up-tempo offense. Miami ranks 104th nationally with 15 plays of 20 or more yards from scrimmage. The Hurricanes have 12 pass plays of 20 or more yards.

Tyler Van Dyke is clearly struggling in the new offense under coordinator Josh Gattis. Van Dyke has 20 completions this season of 15 or more yards and four of 25 or more. Miami backup QB Jake Garcia has seven completions of 15 or more yards and two of 25 or more in 90 fewer pass attempts than Van Dyke.

Miami is averaging 77.25 plays per game in 2022 compared to 73 in 2020. The Hurricanes ran an average of 73.3 plays versus power five teams in 2021 compared to 77 against Texas A&M this season. Miami was 20th in total offense in 2021 averaging 448.8 total yards per game.

Miami is 37th nationally in 2022 averaging 447.5 total yards per game. Michigan had the 24th ranked offense in 2021 averaging 443.1 total yards per game led by Gattis as their coordinator. Expect the offensive numbers to go down with the majority of remaining games on the college football schedule in conference play.

"“Yeah, we’re going to play more tempo…(but we need to ) hit more deep plays, more explosive plays, for that to happen…Once you get that 20-yard gain, we’ll go faster because I guess the defense is discombobulated…When we’re not moving the ball well there’s no way we can go tempo. We gotta figure out ways to beat them with the run and all that type of stuff. We just gotta get more explosive plays to be able to do tempo. That’s what we’re trying to work on….(The deep balls are always fun…It excites everyone…We’ve been getting a lot of soft coverages. We gotta take what they give us.Once they start coming up we gotta hit the deep shots and hit those double moves. When the time comes we gotta hit them. We gotta do a better job of that.’’"

Susan Miller Degnan of the Miami Herald quoted Tyler Van Dyke from the video prior to the quote. North Carolina is 111th nationally with 378 plays on defense this season. The Tar Heels are 103rd allowing 5.96 yards per play. North Carolina has been susceptible to allowing big plays defensively.

The Tar Heels are 105th allowing 78 plays of 10 or more yards. Using the 20-yard threshold set by Van Dyke, North Carolina is 116th nationally with 28 plays allowed at that distance. Miami has to take advantage of the North Carolina defense susceptibility to allow big plays. The Hurricanes need big plays versus North Carolina.

If Miami can hit big plays against North Carolina the crowd will be more active. Miami has 22 runs of 10 or more yards this season and three of 20 plus. Jaylan Knighton and Henry Parrish who are the two most explosive running backs for Miami were hurt versus North Carolina. Thad Franklin could start on Saturday.

Franklin has four runs of 10 or more yards and one of 20 or more on 37 carries. Gattis needs to devise a way for Miami to become more explosive offensively. Miami was 35th in 2021 with 69 plays of 20 or more yards. The Hurricanes need to return to being the explosive offense they were under Gattis’ predecessor Rhett Lashlee.
