Miami football slow starts have doomed them in 3 game losing streak

The Miami football team has been outscored 34-6 in the first quarter during its three game losing streak. Miami trailed Texas A&M 10-3 at the end of the first quarter, Middle Tennessee State led Miami 17-3 after the first 15 minutes and North Carolina took a 7-0 lead after the opening stanza.

Texas A&M, Middle Tennessee State and North Carolina all extended those leads. The Aggies and Tar Heels had leads of 17-3 and the Blue Raiders had a 24-3 lead before Miami attempted a comeback. Texas A&M is 121st nationally averaging two points per game in the first quarter in 2022.

Middle Tennessee State ranks 45th nationally averaging 6.8 PPG in the first quarter and North Carolina is 40th at seven first quarter PPG. Miami is 120th nationally averaging 2.3 first quarter PPG. The numbers that are calculated are only against FBS opponents. Texas A&M is 27th nationally allowing 3.4 first quarter PPG.

Middle Tennessee State is 81st allowing 6.8 first quarter PPG and North Carolina is 39 with opponents scoring four first quarter PPG. Miami is 108th allowing 8.5 first quarter PPG. Each of the last three Miami football opponents have exceeded their averaging first quarter scoring output versus the Hurricanes.

Additionally, each of the three Miami opponents held the Hurricanes below their average scoring output in the first quarter. Texas A&M and Middle Tennesee exceeded their first quarter scoring averages versus Miami and North Carolina matched theirs. The Miami win over Southern Mississippi should have been a predictor.

Miami led Southern Mississippi 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. Southern Mississippi took a 7-3 lead 30 seconds into the second quarter. Miami did not regain the lead until 20 seconds remained in the first half on a one yard Henry Parrish run. The Hurricanes have been better in the second quarter.

Miami is averaging 7.8 PPG in the second quarter versus  while allowing 7.0 PPG. The Hurricanes need to get off to better starts in ACC play. Miami has yet to comeback to take the lead from any of their deficits during the three game losing streak. It is critical for Miami to get off to good starts the remainder of the 2022 season.
