After finishing third in the ACC Preseason Player of the Year voting, Tyler Van Dyke has fallen out of the top half of the quarterback rankings in the conference by Brad Crawford of 247 Sports. Van Dyke was inconsistent in the first four games of the 2021 season before passing for 496 yards versus North Carolina on Saturday.
Tyler Van Dyke significantly improved his 2022 statistics with the performance versus North Carolina. The 496 passing yards by Van Dyke were the second most in Miami history to Stephen Morris who threw for 566 versus North Carolina State in 2012. Van Dyke is now third in the ACC averaging 259.4 passing yards per game.
Van Dyke is fifth in the ACC completing 64.0 percent of his passes, seventh with a 134.88 passer rating and second with 35 pass attempts per game. His attempts per game average is attributable to the performance versus North Carolina. Van Dyke didn’t finish games versus Bethune-Cookman and Middle Tennessee State.
Van Dyke is in the bottom half of the ACC in other major passing numbers. The Miami signal-caller is ninth with seven touchdown passes this season and 12th with four interceptions. Crawford discusses the season that Van Dyke has had and analyzes why he regressed during the first four games this season.
"9. TYLER VAN DYKE, MIAMITotal QBR: 52.6 (8th)“The word: What happened to first-round status for Tyler Van Dyke? He hasn’t been on the same page with his wideouts at times this season and three straight losses have taken the Hurricanes outside of the national rankings.Starting the ACC slate 0-1 with the loss to North Carolina over the weekend is not what Miami had in mind, but Van Dyke did manage his best outing of the campaign with 496 yards and three touchdowns.Pass protection has been okay through five games for the Hurricanes, but without much of a rushing attack to speak of, OC Josh Gattis is asking too much of his veteran quarterback.”"
Van Dyke will have to get hot over the last seven games as he did in the final six contests of 2021 to make another run at potentially being a first-round pick. The difference this season is that the flaws of Van Dyke have been exposed. Miami has five of the top seven ACC pass defenses remaining on its 2022 schedule.
Duke who is 11th in the ACC and surprisingly Clemson who is 12th are the lowest-ranked pass defenses Miami will play on the remainder of the 2022 schedule. Van Dyke threw for 381 yards, three TDs and no interceptions in a 47-10 2021 Miami win over Duke. Miami did not play Clemson in 2021.
Tight end Will Mallory had a breakout game for a Miami receiver this season with eight receptions for 115 yards versus North Carolina. That is the first 100-yard receiving game in their career for any Miami receiver currently on the roster. Van Dyke needs more consistency from the Miami receivers for the rest of the 2022 season.
