Miami football OC Josh Gattis history versus Virginia Tech HC Brent Pry

Miami football offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry have a past history with their units facing each other. Gattis was the Michigan offensive coordinator from 2019 through 2021. Pry was the Penn State defensive coordinator from 2016 through 2021. Gattis and Pry coached together 2012-17.

Gattis and Pry were at Vanderbilt together during the 2012 and ’13 seasons and at Penn State from 2014 through 2017 under current Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin. Gattis left Penn State after the 2017 season to become the co-offensive coordinator at Alabama. Gattis left Alabama to become the OC at Michigan.

The 2019 season was the first former co-workers Gattis and Pry faced each other as coordinators. Gattis and Pry coached against each other from 2019 through 2021. In 2019, Michigan had 417 yards of total offense but was unable to come back from a 21-0 deficit losing 28-21 in State College.

The Pry coached defense had one interception of Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson. Penn State had three tackles for loss, one sack and five pass breakups in addition to the interception. Michigan had 141 yards rushing and all three of its TDs on the ground. The Wolverines threw for 279 yards.

Penn State improved to 7-0 with the win over Michigan in 2019 which fell to 5-2. Michigan and Penn State struggled during the covid shortened 2020 season when the teams played in their final game. Penn State and Pry won again 27-14 over Gattis and Michigan. Penn State held Michigan to 286 yards.

Michigan QBs combined to go 12-128 for 112 yards passing with no TDs or interceptions. The Wolverines did lose a fumble. Michigan ran for 174 yards and two TDs. Hassan Haskins had 17 carries for 112 yards and both Michigan TDs. Penn State had two tackles for loss and four pass breakups in the 2020 win.

Michigan finished the 2020 season 2-4, Penn State, 1-5. Gattis earned his first win versus Pry as a coordinator in 2021. Michigan won 21-17 at Penn State. The Wolverines had 361 total yards against Penn State and the Pry defense. Michigan QB Cade McNamara was 19-29 for 217 yards, three TDs and no interceptions.

Michigan ran 41 times for 144 yards, just 3.51 yards per carry. The Wolverines lost one fumble. Haskins had 31 carries for 156 yards rushing and five receptions for 45 yards. Michigan scored the game-winning TD with 3:29 remaining on a McNamara to tight end Erick Ali 47-yard pass. Ali finished with four receptions for 64 yards.

Michigan finished with 217 passing yards and 144 rushing in the 2021 win over Penn State. The Nittany Lions produced four TFLs, two sacks, three PBUs, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. In the three meetings matching Gattis and Pry, Michigan averaged 354.67 total yards.

The Wolverines have averaged 19.67 points per game against the Nittany Lions when Gattis and Pry have matched up the last three seasons. Virginia Tech is allowing 26.0 PPG in their inaugural season with Pry as the head coach. The Miami football team is averaging 32.8 PPG this season. Miami is 23rd nationally in total offense.

Virginia Tech is 34th nationally allowing 341.2 yards per game. The Miami football team averages 465.6 yards per game. The performance of the Virginia Tech defense this season is in line with how Penn State performed against the Michigan offense the last three seasons. Miami should exceed the averages allowed by Virginia Tech.
