The Miami football team flipped the script from the first five games during the 2022 season with 10 first-quarter points in their 20-14 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday. A five-yard pass from Tyler Van Dyke to Frank Ladson 2:55 into the game was the first Miami touchdown versus an FBS opponent in 2022.

The Ladson touchdown was the first lead for the Miami football team since defeating Southern Mississippi 30-7 last month. Miami added a second TD in the second quarter on a Van Dyke to Colbie Young 17-yard pass. The 10-0 first-quarter start was encouraging for Miami.

Miami was outscored 34-9 in the first quarter during its three-game losing streak to Texas A&M, Middle Tennessee State and North Carolina. The Hurricanes extended the lead versus the Hokies to 20-0 in the third quarter. Miami had 302 yards in the first half versus Virginia Tech. The Hurricanes had 147 yards in the second half.

Miami had more yards in the first quarter than the entire second half and added 141 yards in the second quarter. The Hurricanes have often struggled offensively in the first half this season. Miami had 197 yards in the first half versus Southern Mississippi and 248 in the second half.

In the first half versus Texas A&M Miami had 172 total yards. Miami had 220 in the second half. Miami had 191 yards in the first half versus Middle Tennessee State and 176 in the second. The Hurricanes had 133 yards in the third quarter with Jake Garcia replacing Tyler Van Dyke. Miami had 43 yards in the fourth quarter.

After 93 yards in the first quarter versus North Carolina and trailing 14-0 early in the second the Hurricanes’ offense exploded for 230 in the second 15-minute stanza. Miami trailed 21-17 at halftime versus North Carolina. Miami had 214 yards in the second half but their comeback fell short in a 27-24 loss.

Miami has to become more consistent throughout the game. After taking the 20-0 lead Miami failed to put the game away with Virginia Tech scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Miami put the game away when they were able to run out the clock with two first downs in the final 3:20.

The Hurricanes have had at least one poor quarter offensively in every game versus an FBS opponent this season. Gattis has the Miami offense playing well the last two weeks working more with the strengths of Van Dyke. The next problem to solve with the Miami offense is consistency throughout the game.
