Miami football continues falling with updated week 8 ESPN FPI
The Miami football team fell eight more spots in the ESPN Football Power Index following its 20-14 at Virginia Tech on Saturday. Miami is 45th in the FPI, ninth in the ACC and third in the Coastal division behind North Carolina and Pittsburgh. The Atlantic division is dominating the ACC in 2022.
Clemson is first in the ACC FPI ratings and seventh nationally. North Carolina dropped three spots after its 38-35 win over Duke to 38th overall and leads the Coastal division. Clemson has a 90.6 percent chance to win the Atlantic division. The Tigers are given a 74.5 percent chance to win the ACC per the FPI.
North Carolina has a 78.8 percent chance to win the ACC Coastal and a 16.6 percent chance to win the ACC. Miami will likely have to win out and hope North Carolina loses twice to win the Coastal. The Hurricanes have a 5.5 percent chance to win the Coastal and 1.1 for the ACC. Miami is projected to finish 6.3-5.7 by the FPI.
There is a 77.9 percent chance for Miami to win six games and become bowl eligible. Miami has better than a 50 percent chance to win four of its six remaining games. There is a 48.7 percent chance to defeat Florida State on November 5. Miami is given a 12 percent chance to win at Clemson on November 19.
Half of the remaining six opponents on the Miami schedule are ranked higher than the Hurricanes in the FPI. The FPI projects Miami with a 75.2 percent chance to defeat Duke on Saturday and a 66.7 percent chance a week later at Virginia. Following Florida State, Miami is projected with a 69.4 percent chance to defeat Georgia Tech.
All three of the 2022 Miami football losses were in games the FPI projected the Hurricanes with better than a 50 percent chance of winning. Miami has too often lost games they have been favored in recent seasons. Clemson is the only game that Miami has a low chance of winning this season per the FPI.
