Defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor has made a big impact on the Miami football team after transferring from West Virginia during the 2022 off-season. Mesidor was named to the 247 Sports midseason all-American team on Thursday. Mesidor had a breakout game versus Virginia Tech.

The Hokies had trouble blocking Mesidor who finished with eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Mesidor has 19 tackles, six TFLs, five sacks and three pass breakups this season. The ACC named Mesidor their lineman of the week for his performance versus Virginia Tech. Mesidor is one of only two ACC players named.

Kobie Turner of Wake Forest was the only other player from the ACC and other DL named to the 247 sports preseason midseason all-American team. The Miami football team has used Mesidor as an edge rusher or defensive tackle. At 6’2, 272 pounds, Mesidor has provided Miami with excellent versatility.

Mesidor leads a Miami defense that ranks seventh nationally averaging 3.5 sacks per game. Miami is 24th nationally averaging 6.67 sacks per game. Mesidor has led the transformation of the Miami DL in the offseason primary through the transfer portal. Clint Brewster of 247 Sports summarized Mesidor’s contributions.

Being named to the 247 Sports midseason all-transfer team was the latest honor for Mesidor this week. Mesidor was named the DL of the week by the ACC. On3 named Mesidor the ACC transfer of the week and he earned the Walter Camp national defensive player of the week. Expect more honors to come for Mesidor this season.

At his current pace, Mesidor should challenge for first-team All-ACC. Mesidor is tied for first in the ACC in sacks per game and sixth in TFLs per game. Miami linebacker Corey Flagg leads the ACC with 9.5 tackles for loss and 1.58 TFLs per game. With Mesidor, Miami has one of the best DLs in the country.
