After a disappointing 4-4 start to the 2022 season, the Miami football team will host Florida State on Saturday. Florida State ended a four-game losing streak to Miami last season in Tallahassee. The Seminole won seven in a row versus Miami prior to the four-year run by the Hurricanes. FSU is expected to be about a seven-point favorite.
After four straight losing seasons, Florida State has started the 2022 season 5-3 in a tough ACC Atlantic Division. Miami needs two more wins to become bowl eligible for the 10th straight season. Miami was on probation in the season prior to the streak beginning in 2013. Miami leads the series versus Florida State 35-31.
The 2022 seasons for the Hurricanes and Seminoles have been nearly opposite despite similar records. Miami began the preseason ranked 16th and 17th in the USA Today Coaches Poll and AP Top 25. The Hurricanes were picked to win the ACC Coastal Division and third favorite to win the conference.
The strength of the Florida State versus Miami football rivalry has the game placed in prime time with a 7:30 ET kickoff on ABC. Florida State at Miami was chosen surprisingly over Wake Forest at North Carolina State who are ranked in both polls this week. Florida State and Miami are unranked.
Florida State can clinch its first bowl berth since 2019 when they lost to Arizona State in the Sun Bowl. The Seminoles are the most common opponent for the Hurricanes. Florida State and the Miami football team have not played with both teams ranked since 2016. Number 23 Florida State beat 10th-ranked Miami 20-19.
Miami was ranked 10th when they beat unranked Florida State 52-10 in 2020. Florida State beat Miami 31-28 last season when both teams were unranked. The 2016 win for Florida State over Miami was the last time the Seminoles entered the game against Miami in the national rankings.
Florida State has played a difficult schedule this season. All three Florida State losses in 2022 were against teams who were ranked at the of those games. Florida State lost to 22nd-ranked Wake Forest, number 14 North Carolina State and fourth-ranked Clemson. Those losses came in a row before this weekend.
Florida State bounced back with a 41-16 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday. Miami won 14-12 in quadruple overtime at Virginia after traveling to Charlottesville with four losses in the previous five games. Miami has not lost at home to Florida State since 2016. In addition to 2020, Miami won 28-27 in 2018.
