Miami football roster ranked slightly more talented than Florida State

The Miami football roster is ranked 13th in the 247 Sports team talent rankings and Florida State is 17th ahead of their game on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami players have an average ranking of 89.63 with the Hurricanes’ cumulative ranking of 855.83. Florida State has an average ranking of 88.44 and a 784.53 total.

Miami has two five-star players on its roster, 44 four-stars and 35 three-stars. Florida State has zero five-star players on its roster, 30 four stars and 53 three stars. Defensive tackle Leonard Taylor, safety James Williams and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson are rated higher than anyone on the Florida State roster.

Defensive back Demorie Tate is the highest-rated FSU player with a .9828 grade from 247 Sports. Taylor has a grade of .9938, Williams .9921 and Stevenson .9831. Taylor and Williams were 2021 five-star signees. Stevenson transferred to the Miami football program in 2021 after being a 2019 Georgia four-star signees.

Wide receiver Frank Ladson is fourth on the list for Miami with a grade of .9800 after transferring from Clemson during the 2022 offseason. Wide receivers Mycah Pittman and Johnny Wilson who transferred to Florida State from Oregon and Arizona State and both from Calabassas, California are the fifth and sixth highest-rated FSU players.

Wilson and Pittman are the top two receivers for Florida State. Wilson tops FSU with 30 receptions for 603 yards and four touchdowns. Pittman is second on the Seminoles with 25 receptions and three TDs and third with 288 yards. Quarterback Jordan Travis transferred to FU from Louisville in 2019.

Mario Cristobal and Florida State head coach Mike Norvell have utilized the transfer portal to rebuild their rosters. Miami has five transfers on the defensive line. Akheem Mesidor has been a key contributor for Miami this season after transferring from West Virginia. Mesidor has 25 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks.

Jared Verse who transferred from FCS Albany has 28 tackles and leads Florida State with 11 TFLs and 4.5 TFLs. Running back Trey Benson has also been productive for Florida State after transferring from Oregon where he and Pittman were signed by Cristobal. Benson has 483 yards rushing and three TDs.

Ladson has been productive for Miami with 25 receptions for 256 yards and one TD. Miami projects to continue having a higher-ranked roster. In the first three classes signed by Florida State under Norvell Miami has had a higher-ranked class. Miami 17th to Florida State’s 22 in 2020,  11 and 23 in 2021 and 16 and 20 in 2022.

With current commits, the Miami football program has the eighth-ranked 2023 class and Florida State 19. Miami should continue to recruit better than Florida State in the future with Cristobal as head coach. Norvell has been praised more for his ability as a game planner. Cristobal has often been criticized for his Xs and Os approach.
