The Miami basketball team travels to Connecticut to play Providence on Saturday in the 2022 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament. Miami will play Maryland or St. Louis on Sunday. The Hurricanes have started the season 3-0 with wins over Lafayette, North Carolina Greensboro and Florida A&M.

Providence has started the season with wins over Rider, Northeastern and Stonehill. Miami head coach Jim Larranaga has an opportunity to earn his 700th career win against his alma mater. Larranaga played at Providence from 1968 through 1971. Larranaga averaged 16.3 points per game, 6.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Friars.

The Miami basketball team has received good balance through its first three games with four starters averaging in double figures. Jordan Miller has surprisingly led Miami in scoring averaging 15.7 PPG, 7.7 RPG and 1.7 APG. Norchard Omier has been exactly as expected averaging  12.7 PPG, 11.0 RPG and 2.3 APG.

Guards Nijel Pack and Isaiah Wong have been good but are not putting up the elite scoring numbers expected of them. Providence is led by wing  Bryce Hopkins who is averaging 14.7 PPG and 8.3 RPG. Guard Clifton Moore comes off the bench for Providence and is averaging 13.0 PPG and 5.0 RPG.

Expect a wide-open game between Miami and Providence. Miami is averaging 77.7 PPG which ranks 132nd nationally. Providence is averaging 85.0 PPG which is 53rd nationally. This is the first test for Miami and Providence against a team from a Power six conference after playing low majors to open the season.

Providence is a poor defensive rebounding team and opponents have shot a high percentage against the Friars in the first three games. Miami is 44th nationally in three-point attempts made and 33rd in makes this season. Omier is fifth nationally averaging 5.0 offensive rebounds per game and could be a challenge for Providence.
