The abysmal offensive performance by the Miami football team in a 40-10 loss at Clemson on Saturday night challenged program record lows. Miami had eight yards in the first half and finished with 98 for the third lowest in program history. Miami had 22 total yards versus Kentucky in 1951 and 87 versus Notre Dame in 1965.

Miami had one first down in the first half. The six Miami first downs they finished with versus Clemson were the lowest since losing 35-3 to Wisconsin in the 2018 Pinstripe Bowl when they also had a half dozen. Miami averaged 2.3 yards per play which was its lowest since at least its  58-0 2015 loss to Clemson.

The Miami football team ran 42 plays on offense on Saturday. In 2015, Miami had 61 plays for 146 yards and 2.4 yards per play versus Clemson. Al Golden was fired after the loss to the Tigers in 2014. This was the third time in the last four games that Miami has finished with under 300 yards of total offense.

Miami is 109th nationally versus FBS opponents averaging 19.7 points per game and is 97th averaging 343.8 yards per game. The Miami offense has regressed significantly since averaging 30.9 PPG and 422.5 YPG versus FBS opponents in 2022-23. Miami has not overcome injuries to Tyler Van Dyke and the offensive line.

The sub-300-yard offensive performances by Miami have coincided with the shoulder injury to Van Dyke against Duke last month. Miami has 391 passing yards in the last four games. That is total, not average. Van Dyke eclipsed those numbers in consecutive games versus North Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Next. Kamren Kinchens had another big game versus Clemson. dark

Miami has a lot to work offensively to defeat Pittsburgh next week and become bowl eligible. The question remains if offensive coordinator Josh Gattis will return next season and who the Miami QB will be. Van Dyke is eligible for the 2023 NFL Draft. Jake Garcia could choose to enter the transfer portal.
