Miami football depth takes another hit with Elijah Roberts transfer
The depth of the Miami football team took another hit with defensive lineman Elijah Roberts announcing his entry into the transfer portal via Twitter on Sunday night. Roberts set career highs this season with nine tackles and one tackle for loss. The Hurricanes signed Roberts out of Miami Columbus in the class of 2020.
Roberts was a four-star signee and the 358th-ranked player, 13th strongside defensive end and 58th player in Florida in the class of 2020. In the 2020 Miami class, Roberts was the 10th-ranked player and the Hurricanes’ second-highest-rated defensive lineman. Roberts last recorded a stat with one tackle against Florida State.
Roberts was a 2022 returnee on a Miami defensive line that brought in five transfers. Three of the four 2022 Miami starting DL were transfers. Sophomore Leonard Taylor was the lone returnee. Roberts provided Miami with the versatility to play end or tackle. Roberts had a season-high two tackles this season.
Roberts has 21 career tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a 0.5 sack. The season highs for Roberts was two tackles each in the first two games of the season versus Bethune-Cookman and Southern Mississippi and last month versus Duke. Roberts had three tackles in a game twice earlier in his career.

Roberts is the third Miami football player to enter the transfer portal in less than a week. Defensive back Gilbert Frierson and running back Thad Franklin preceded Roberts into the transfer portal. Miami will lose DL Mitchell Agude, Jacob Lichtenstein and Antonio Moultrie who are in their last seasons of eligibility.
Agude, Lichtenstein and Moultrie were transfers to Miami during the 2022 offseason. Expect Mario Cristobal and his staff to add multiple transfer DL to the 2023 roster. Miami could lose several more DL as transfers that have not received much playing time this season. The DL has been a strength for Miami in 2022.
