CFB expert examines Miami football transfer portal shopping list
The Miami football team has already lost six players to the transfer portal and could see that number at least double whenever its season ends. Clint Brewster of 247 Sports created a “Transfer Portal Shopping List: Positions Power 5 teams need to improve this offseason”
Expect Mario Cristobal and the coaching staff to seek to improve the Miami football roster at virtually every position during the 2022-’23 offseason. Three of the six Miami players to enter the transfer portal are defensive backs and another two are on the defensive line. Those positions will likely be priorities.
Miami added five transfer DL to the 2022 roster. Three of those five DL are seniors. Miami needs to add depth to the DL for next season. Edge rusher Jayden Wayne is the only 2023 Miami commit on the DL. Miami has five offensive linemen committed for 2023. The OL could be another area Miami seeks to add transfers.
Finding an impact player at an offensive skill position will also be critical for the Miami football program. The Hurricanes are 119th nationally in plays produced of 20 yards or more. Linebacker will be a position Miami seeks to add more size and speed. Brewster has a surprising position for Miami on his shopping list.
"Miami: Offensive line/Quarterback“As a former offensive lineman himself, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal has been known as an offensive line guru. However, the Hurricanes’ offensive line could use a major overhaul after giving up 30 sacks so far this year, which ranks 94th in the country in sacks allowed. The Hurricanes also rank 93rd in rushing offense. The Miami offensive line has three freshmen upfront and right tackle DJ Scaife will have his eligibility expire at the end of the season. Don’t be surprised if the Hurricanes look to add some help in the portal.Quarterback will be a big discussion point for the Hurricanes as they look to move forward. The quarterback room regressed this season, which is extremely disappointing considering how well Tyler Van Dyke ended the 2021 season.Van Dyke threw 25 touchdowns and six interceptions last year, while tossing only 10 touchdowns and four interceptions this season. In his defense, he’s been battling injuries. Still, backup Jake Garcia has also struggled when given the opportunity to play.Freshman Jacurri Brown has flashed at times with his arm and running ability, but still has a long way to go. There are transfer whisper about Van Dyke and Garcia and we’ll see what happens. Does Miami look for help at the position in the portal or stick with who they have?”"
Miami will almost definitely seek to add depth and experience to the OL for 2023. If Van Dyke decides to return to Miami it seems very unlikely Miami would choose to pursue a quarterback in the transfer portal. It will also depend on if Jake Garcia chooses to return or transfer to another program.
Miami has a commitment from three-star QB Emory Williams who participated at the Elite 11 camp this summer. If Miami loses Garcia and Van Dyke which is a long shot, they would almost definitely have to add a transfer QB. Miami will certainly be busy in the transfer portal seeking to add depth and upgrade talent.
