Miami basketball continues rolling defeat Rutgers in ACC-Big 10 Challenge

The Miami basketball team earned its seventh win in eight games this season with a 68-61 win over Rutgers in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge. Miami improved to 10-6 in the ACC-Big 10 challenge. The Hurricanes are 9-3 overall and 6-2 at home under Jim Larranaga in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge.

Miami overcame a 46-35 second half deficit with 16:39 remaining closing the game on a 33-15 run. The Hurricanes had good balance in the second half with five players scoring between six and eight points. Nijel Pack scored all eight of his points in the second half including a three-point shot with 22 second left to extend the lead to five.

Isaiah Wong blocked a Caleb McConnell shot, Bensley Joseph made two free throws and Miami escaped with the win. Jordan Miller scored  17 points, had 10 rebounds, three assists and one steal. Norchad Omier matched Miller for a game high 17 and had nine boards on 6-8 from the floor to give Miami a critical inside presence.

Caleb McConnell and Clifford Omoruyi led Rutgers with 16 points. Omier played the 6’11, 240 pound Omoruyi even for most of the game Omoruyi matched Omier’s nine rebounds and shot 7-10 from the floor. Aundre Hyatt scored 11 points for Rutgers as the Scarlett Knights’ only other player in double figures.

Wong was the only other Miami player in double figures with 16 and added three rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Miami overcame a 39-29 rebounding deficit with a 36-28 advantage scoring points in the paint. Rutgers shot 14-32 from the floor and made five of their nine three-point attempts in the first half.

Miami was 14 of 28 from the floor but made only one of 11 three point attempts in the first half. In the second half Miami held Rutgers to 11-35 from the floor and 2-12 on three-point attempts. Miami made 12 of 25 from the floor and five of their nine three-point attempts. Miami closed the game on a 7-0 run in the last 1:22.

The 6-2 Miami women’s basketball team will host 7-0, number 17 Michigan in their ACC-Big 10 Challenge game on Thursday night. The Miami men’s basketball team will travel to Louisville on Sunday to open ACC play against the 0-7 Cardinals. Miami will return home to host Cornell next Wednesday.
