Miami continues building elite DL flipping Collins Acheampong from Michigan

The Miami football program continued building an elite defensive line by flipping Michigan commit Collins Acheampong on Tuesday. Acheampong committed to Michigan in June. Acheampong is the 165th-ranked player, the ninth-ranked athlete projected as a DL and 11th in California in the class of 2023.

The addition of the 6’7, 254-pound Acheampong moves Miami to the eighth-ranked class nationally after Miami passed Clemson with the flip. Collins Acheampong was the second highest-rated commit in the 2023 Michigan class and he is ninth among the Miami commitments.

Before tearing his meniscus, Acheampong played four games this season with 14 tackles, six tackles for loss and three sacks. Acheampong joins four-star edge rusher, Jayden Wayne, in the 2023 Miami class. Miami signed four-star edge rushers Nyjalik Kelly and Cyrus Moss in the 2022 class.

Acheampong told 247 Sports “The injury actually helped me realized Miami was where I wanted to be…I realized that family and finding a place that felt like home is most important and that was Miami.” Greg Biggins of 247 Sports reported that Acheampong intends to sign in December and be an early enrollee with Miami.

Persistence for Miami paid off with Acheampong. Despite being committed to Michigan for over four months, the Miami staff continued to stay in touch with Acheampong. Acheampong told Biggins that he has the best relationship with the Miami coaching staff. Acheampong is the 11th 2022 Miami blue chip commit.

Miami now has 20 commits in the 2023 class. Cornerback Cormani McClain is the sole 2023 Miami five-star commit. The Hurricanes have four four-star commits and nine three-stars in their 2023 class. Miami signed 10 four-star players in the 2022 class out of 15 players. Cristobal is building a Miami roster with a high blue-chip ratio.

Miami loses edge rusher Mitchell Agude who is a senior. The Hurricanes have already lost defensive linemen Allan Haye and Elijah Roberts to the transfer portal. More Miami DL could decide to transfer. Acheampong is a long-term project. Expect Miami to add transfer DL who are able to contribute in 2023.
