After losing safety Brian Balom to the transfer portal on Thursday the Miami football program is down to three players at the position. Florida transfer safety Donovan McMillon tweeted on Thursday afternoon he received an offer from Miami. Seven of the 15 Miami transfers are defensive backs.

McMillon had 30 tackles and one tackle for loss in two seasons with Florida. In 2022 McMillon finished the season with 20 tackles and his lone career TFL. McMillon was the 187th-ranked player, 12th safety and eighth player in Pennysylvania in 2020 out of Canonsburg Peters Township.

McMillon is listed at 6’1, 205 pounds on the Florida roster. Per Gaby Urrutia of Inside the U, McMillon played in 109 defensive snaps while allowing five receptions for 37 yards with no touchdowns on six targets. McMillon has also received offers from over a half dozen other Power Five programs.

The Miami football program will return starting safeties Kamren Kinchens and James Williams but is desperate for depth. Markeith Williams is the only other returning safety on the Miami roster. Miami has three defensive backs committed to the 2023 class.  Antione Jackson is the only one who is listed as a safety.

Many projections have Jackson at CB in college. Expect Miami to try and add two or three safeties through the transfer portal. Mario Cristobal has been lauded as a strong closer in recruiting throughout his career. Expect Miami to try and add a safety in the 2023 recruiting class as well.

Pittsburgh has a 14.3 percent chance to sign McMillon and West Virginia 12.5 percent per the On3.Com predicition machine. It’s still very early in the process for McMillon. Expect McMillon to receive more offers. The Panthers and Mountaineers will have an advantage if McMillon wants to play closer to home.

The 45 day transfer portal window that began on Monday will be open through January 18. Players cannot enter the transfer potal again until after spring practice. The second transfer portal window is from May 1 through the 15. Miami added several players following 2022 spring practice.
