The Miami football program has offered transfer defensive back A’Zyrian Alexander of Southeast Louisiana plus defensive linemen Shane Cokes of Dartmouth and Thomas Gore of Georgia State as announced by all three via Twitter on Thursday. Miami has to add depth on the DL and secondary for the 2023 season.

Alexander had 95 tackles, 20 pass deflections, nine interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in three seasons with Southeast Louisiana. This season Alexander had 27 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass deflections. The Miami football program lost seven DBs to the transfer portal plus senior D.J. Ivey.

Cokes has 87 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, one pass defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Most of those numbers occurred in the last two years. Cokes had two tackles in two games played in 2019 before the Ivy League canceled their entire 2021 season due to covid.

Cokes had his best season in 2022 with 53 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, one pass deflection and one forced fumble. Miami loses senior edge rusher Mitchell Agude who transferred from UCLA for the 2022 season. Cokes would be a good replacement for Agude at edge rusher.

In four seasons Gore had 93 tackles, 22 TFLs, 11 sacks and two forced fumbles. Gore should have two seasons of eligibility remaining after redshirting in 2019 and gaining the extra season of eligibility following the 2020 covid season. Gore had 38 tackles, eight TFLs, five sacks and the two forced fumbles in 2022.

Cokes and Gore had their best seasons in 2021. Cokes is 6’3, 275 pounds. Gore is 6’0, 270, played noseguard and defensive end in 2021 but was primarily on the interior this season. The Miami DL was near as decimated by transfers as the secondary. Three Miami DL entered into the transfer portal.

Expect Mario Cristobal and his staff to target more DL and DBs through the transfer portal. Miami has three DB and DL committed in the class of 2023. The Hurricanes are still recruiting several DL and DBs in the class of 2023. The most notable of those to watch is four-star legacy DL Rueben Bain
