Miami football 2023 class has 3 of top 18 recruits in program history
Five-star Miami football commits cornerback Cormani McClain and offensive tackles Francis Mauigoa and Samson Okunlola are three of the top 18 recruits in Hurricanes program history per 247 Sports. McClain ranks sixth in Miami history, Mauigoa seventh and Okunlola 18th in the rankings that date back to 2000.
National championship linebacker D.J. Williams who signed with the Miami football program in 2000 is the Hurricanes’ highest-rated signee ever and the eighth-best overall per the 247 Sports composite rankings. Seantrel Henderson is second, Willie Williams third, Ryan Moore fourth and Kyle Wright fifth.
McClain is the third highest-rated defensive player in Miami history behind both Williams. Willie Williams was a LB that signed with Miami in 2004 and had a troubled tenure. Henderson was an OT who signed with Miami in 2010, Moore was a wide receiver in the 2002 class and Wright a QB in 2003.
Miami will also have defensive tackle Leonard Taylor who will be entering his junior season and was the 15th highest-rated signee in Miami history and safety James Williams who ranked 16th in Hurricanes lore in the class of 2021. Taylor and Williams had outstanding sophomore seasons with Miami in 2022.
Taylor led Miami, tied with linebacker Corey Flagg and defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor with 10.5 tackles for loss. Williams finished with 58 tackles in 2023 which were second to on Miami fellow safety and 2021 signee Kamren Kinchens who had 59 stops. Miami will have five of the top 18 signees in program history in 2023.
Mario Cristobal and his staff have done an excellent job securing elite talent in the last two classes. The previous staff signed Taylor and Williams to lead the 2021 class that ranked 11th nationally. Maiugoa, McClain and Okunlola are the first time Miami will sign three five-star prospects in the same class.
Miami loses CBs D.J. Ivey and Tyrique Stevenson and starting right tackle D.J. Scaife. Expect Mauigoa, McClain and Okunlola to all challenge for starting spots in 2023. Miami had the 12th most talented 2022 college football roster per the 247 Sports composite rankings. Cristobal and his staff are upgrading the Miami talent.
